Aziz Foundation At Global Donor’s Forum 2018

13 September

The 8th Global Donors Forum was held in London this week at the House of Lords, the British Museum and Mansion House. The three-day conference drew philanthropists, third sector experts and commentators from across the world to discuss this year’s theme “Philanthropy’s Response to Inequality and Societal Tensions.”

The Foundation was honoured to take part and host three sessions on Tuesday. Our first session explored the evolving state of Muslim giving in the United Kingdom. Chaired by Nizam Uddin, Head of Mosaic at The Prince’s Trust, our panellists explored themes such as Millennial Muslim giving power, the changing context of giving in the UK and current research on giving trends in the UK. Panellists included Deputy Director of Islamic Relief Tufail Hussain, writer and VP Islamic Marketing at Ogilvy Shelina Zahra Janmohamed, Leverhulme Early Careers Research Fellow at University of Aberdeen Dr Samantha May, and Director of Public Policy and Volunteering at NCVO Karl Wilding. The Aziz Foundation’s Assistant Director Shenaz Bunglawala participated in a parallel discussion on developing resilient organisations through social investment.

Our Director, Mohammed Abdul Aziz, together with Fatimah Ashrif of Randeree Charitable Trust and Asif Hussain of the nascent British Muslim Trust concluded the day’s sessions with their launch of a consultation on the British Muslim Trust and their presentation of a “Theory of Change” for British Muslim Communities.
The day drew to a close at Mansion House, where members of the Aziz Foundation team were honoured to attend the Legacy Philanthropy Awards, where our friends at the National Zakat Foundation and Beacon Mosque, Al-Madina Mosque in Barking, received awards for Faith-based Giving and Civil Engagement respectively. The First Lady of Turkey Emine Erdogan spoke about the importance of addressing humanitarian challenges around the world with solidarity and purpose.

We at the Foundation are grateful to the Global Donor’s Forum for giving us the opportunity to take part in this year’s GDF and look forward to taking our collaboration further with this year’s attendees in the years to come.
