The Aziz Foundation is delighted to announce that it will be offering Master’s scholarships at Manchester Metropolitan University, where talented British Muslims can receive a scholarship to undertake postgraduate study.
Manchester Metropolitan University has become one of the Foundation’s Preferred Partners, having demonstrated a commitment to removing barriers to access and success for minoritised students and those from lower socio-economic groups. The institution also provides tailored academic and pastoral support to its sizeable Muslim student population, which is significantly greater than the sector average.
The University is also strongly determined to eliminate the degree awarding gap by 2030. Initiatives are in place to support the achievement of this institutional goal, such as the BAME Ambassador Scheme and Welcome Programme, the latter comprised of mandatory online Equality and Diversity awareness training and is used to help staff think and work more inclusively.
Located in Manchester, which has a higher percentage of Muslims compared to the average for England and where up to 40% of children live in households with an income below the poverty line, the institution is particularly intent on increasing its proportion of BAME and Muslim students who are underrepresented in art and performance courses within the sector. In order to improve the visibility of British Muslims within the sector , scholarship recipients are offered an MA in Multimedia Journalism, Creative Writing and Evaluation and Policy Analysis. The institution is committed to tackling Islamophobia on campus, offering social support to British Muslims through the appointment of its first female Muslim chaplain alongside its existing full-time chaplain. Furthermore, Manchester Metropolitan’s Students’ Union has organised Islamophobia awareness workshops and runs educational programmes for its staff.
We look forward to working closely with the university to widen access and increase opportunities at the postgraduate taught level for British Muslim communities.
