Birkbeck, University of London – ranked 4th amongst all UK institutions for its considerable contribution to student social mobility in 2021 – is well placed to increase access to postgraduate study for British Muslims. Determined to be as inclusive an institution as possible, over 40% of the University’s students are from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds.

The University is intent on eliminating the degree awarding gap, having significantly narrowed the overall awarding gap between Black and White students by 20% in the last five years, compared to the 5% national average.

There are several initiatives and programmes in place to widen access to education, including the ‘Diversity 100 PhD Studentships’ for BME students at PhD level.

Facilities on campus include a multi-faith room for all students and access to an Imam through the University of London Chaplaincy.
