Preferred Partners in Focus: university of essex
The University is part of Advance HE’s collaborative project “Towards Embedding Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Curriculum”, which will ignite a step change in how the institution thinks about diversity and inclusion, with a particular focus on race and ethnicity.
Alongside this, the Curriculum University of Essex (CUE) project has been established to support BAME student success at the institution. The project will embed the insights acquired from the Advance HE collaboration by improving how the institution manages and develops its curriculum, supporting new courses and existing provision.
In respect to communities of faith, the University’s Code of Practice concerning Religion and Belief commits it to providing mandatory faith provision on campus.

How has your experience been of studying at Essex University so far?
‘It has been an enjoyable experience. I’ve learnt a great deal about the craft of acting and the impact an artist can have. I’ve continued growing as a person and also learnt a lot about history, cultures and lifestyles.’
What kind of support has been made available to you during your time at the University?
‘There has been strong support from the university and it’s staff. My course leader especially has been very supportive in the handling of anything I have required. They directed me to the right team within the university for anything I needed and provided a space to express myself if and when needed. I have found my acting training to be highly demanding both physically and mentally and these demands were cared for through careful guidance, listening, management of wellbeing and continuous encouragement. I felt like an individual who’s needs were met in ways that fit me. A great example of this was when filming my showreel clip, the fact I was fasting was considered and the schedule was arranged around when it would be best for me to get the most out of my performance.’
How has your time at the university helped you develop as a British Muslim leader?
‘It has been good in reminding me why I do what I do and the impact and responsibility I have as an artist and above all a Muslim. I have been constantly encouraged to be myself and the challenges I’ve faced allowed me to rise to the occasion fully and unapologetically.’
Have you been able to access any opportunities that have helped you prepare for a career in your chosen industry?
‘Yes. I’ve met lots of great industry professionals from a wide range of areas who have provided me with highly useful and applicable information.’
Would you recommend postgraduate study at University of Essex to other British Muslims?
‘Absolutely, I would. I think it is a place where Muslims can be themselves fully and are given the space to excel and thrive.’
